Sightline Debit, One Year In
Having spent a significant portion of my career focused on payments in the U.S. gaming business, I’ve had a front row seat to (and often a hand in) the industry’s evolution, from the launch of online gaming in New Jersey in 2013 to the explosion of sports betting following the 2018 PASPA decision. Digital operations have expanded rapidly alongside these milestones, and cashless payments have become a crucial part of these expansions.
As gaming has evolved, Sightline has helped turn payments challenges into positive experiences for both operators and patrons. We have been driving payments innovation with our products and have helped improve the overall payment experience for cashless gaming from the beginning.
Which is why we were uniquely positioned to help solve the latest problem: What happens when the market becomes too efficient, making deposits and withdrawals nearly frictionless?
That constant cycling is what the industry calls churn. Our conversations with operators reframed how we wanted to approach our next project. It was clear we didn’t need to add just another payment option to their already full payments stack.
Operators Wanted More Than a Payment Option
We constantly ask our partners across the gaming landscape a simple question: What can we do better? The response from operators wasn’t quite what anyone on the product side expected.
Historically, operators had preferred to stay hands-off, handing over the payments piece entirely, laying out a stack of options for the patron, and letting the patron choose whatever suited them. This time, operators told us they wanted something that felt like their own, rather than just another payment method sitting alongside a dozen others.
That mindset shift completely reshaped our build. Through close collaboration and significant input from operators, we designed a transformative new product, one that delivers what operators dreamed of and patrons love to use: Sightline Debit.
Cleared for Launch
Sightline Debit launched with BetRivers one year ago, after years of innovative design, consumer research, and product development.
You never know how a new payments solution will perform until it goes live in the market. I can’t give the team at BetRivers enough credit for their willingness to be the first to pilot Sightline Debit. They saw the problems in the current payments landscape and wanted to help create a solution that could lower payments costs, enhance compliance, and, most important, offer customers a custom payment solution. Sightline Debit helps provide customers with access to their funds and where they feel comfortable to leave the funds, thereby reducing the need to churn.
Fortunately for Sightline, we have tremendous partners who helped us deliver the solution and continue to work with us day in and day out on improving it. Cross River, a technology-first bank, codeveloped the account infrastructure behind Sightline Debit. Operations are smooth because we collaborate daily and have a direct line to Cross River’s senior leadership.
To launch Sightline Debit, BetRivers was willing to start small and scale appropriately. That allowed more time for us to test messaging, watch how patrons behaved, and build evidence before scaling the solution any further. A new product that breaks is hard to recover from, so we were fortunate to launch slowly, and the positive product performance helped earn its way to scale. Moving deliberately gave both companies a repeatable playbook for future launches.
Gaining traction
Over the past year, we’ve learned a ton about patron behavior and their payments habits from observing Sightline Debit usage.
One observation is around our projection that users will have a lower churn rate. When customers can access the funds in their wagering accounts from anywhere at any time, they don’t move money back and forth into an external funding source nearly as often. When money isn’t locked into a single use, patrons manage and budget it similarly to other parts of their financial life. When patrons use the account for everyday spend, it plays into their everyday budgeting decisions, not just gaming.
When we built Sightline Debit, compliance was a core focus and goal for our teams. Rather than creating a product and bringing it to regulators for final approval, Sightline worked alongside our regulatory partners for nearly three years, sharing plans early and folding in their feedback as it came. Regulatory review became part of the build process itself, which is a large reason why expanding into new jurisdictions has been such a smooth endeavor.
One takeaway that surprised the team was how much patrons cared about the card itself. BetRivers’ VIP cardholders received a black metal card, and its premium look and feel has mattered deeply to patrons—far more than a purely functional product would on its own.
Patrons also want a tangible sense of value tied to how they pay, similar to how frequent-flyer status keeps travelers loyal to an airline for the perks or miles rather than just the cheapest fare. That instinct is shaping how Sightline and its operator partners think about loyalty and how we can deliver real value to patrons through the payments experience.
What’s Next
Following our successful launch of Sightline Debit a year ago, we’re excited for more.
More cardholders. More operator programs. More cardholder benefits.
We’re continually refining Sightline Debit—which, as a product person, is the fun part of the job for me. Having proven this model works, our next goal is showing the broader industry how much it can reduce payment costs while giving customers what they truly want: fast access to their funds.
